Argentina will be sensing blood on the Gold Coast on Saturday when facing Australia, with their drought looking like ending sooner rather than later.
They have gone close several times now in this tournament and one feels the victory is coming – they might fancy their chances on Saturday.
Crazy talk? Maybe not, as one wonders what that late win over the Boks took out of the Wallabies and with rain forecast, this could be their time.
Twelve months ago the Wallabies claimed a narrow Round 4 win over the Pumas in Perth to seal their first points of the Rugby Championship. However, they’d count themselves fortunate to survive the expected scrum assault as they held on in the second 40 without scoring a point.
Yes, they did beat the Pumas comfortably in Rosario in the finale as Argentina’s second Rugby Championship had clearly caught up with them. Surely though – and after what we have witnessed thus far in 2014 – the majority of Australian fans are expecting more Perth than Rosario.
Argentina are looking like the real deal in terms of becoming a threat to the big southern trio as there is depth, power, class, intelligence and hunger in their camp. Imagine what a victory would do to their psyche, especially with a Rugby World Cup fast approaching.
…….
Tatafu Polota-Nau’s comeback from an MCL injury is perfectly timed as bare bones does not come close to how Australia are stocked at hooker……There will be no easing back into matters, however, for the Waratah as in Agustín Creevy he faces one of the stand-out scrummaging hookers.
Everyone’s favourite rugby celebrity’s “up the guts” mantra (we miss him) will undoubtedly be adopted by Argentina and it’s whether Australia can deal with such an assault that remains the prediction tipping point. If they can and don’t leak points because of it, then threats such as Matt Toomua, Tevita Kuridrani and Israel Folau can do the necessary damage. Again though, wing depth is a worry with Henry Speight watching on waiting patiently for his bow.
Argentina have no such problem, as will be mentioned below, and with rain forecast in the day, they will fancy their chances up front before a familiar spine of their line-up – led by Nicolás Sánchez – looks to have their say going forward. Then will arrive the Wallaby artillery off the replacements bench in the form of Kurtley Beale and Scott Higginbotham so if Argentina do manage to win this Saturday, no one will argue that they didn’t deserve it.
Ones to watch:
For Argentina: This is arguably Argentina’s strongest backline and with both Juan Imhoff and Manuel Montero having fresh legs from having played fifteen and zero minutes respectively in Napier, the Wallabies had better be alert to their threat. 22-year-old Montero continues to live up to his billing on the international scene and will be delighted to be back in light blue this week. Power, speed and ever growing in confidence, Peter Betham is set to have his hands full. Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe will as always be a workhorse.
Head-to-head: We all saw what the Pumas front-row did to the Springboks and all eyes will therefore be fixated on the first set-piece on Saturday. Can the Wallaby scrum hold its own this weekend? That is a big question as Marcos Ayerza, Ramiro Herrera and Agustín Creevy are giving all their rivals a tough time this season. James Slipper, Sekope Kepu and the returning Tatafu Polota-Nau have to come to the party or the pressure and points will come.
Prediction: Expect nothing in this for the majority before the cavalry arrive. Australia by 1

Since joining the Southern Hemisphere championship, Argentina’s best result has been a 16-all draw with South Africa – in their second match in 2012.
The Pumas have lost their other 14 matches and been outscored by the opposition by 250 points.
Argentina, however, have challenged both South Africa and New Zealand in Tests this season – losing narrowly (6-13 and 31-33) to the Springboks, before extending the All Blacks, despite losing 9-28 last weekend.
The South Americans haven’t beaten the Wallabies since 1997 and haven’t won in Australia since 1984.
Last year in Perth, Argentina made it close, losing by just one point.
Not surprisingly the Wallabies are anxious to avoid becoming the Pumas’ first scalp in the Rugby Championship.
….
Wallaby coach Ewen McKenzie has recognised that threat by rushing seasoned hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau into his pack to help counter the Pumas’ driving mauls and potent scrum.
“You have to deal with the confrontational parts of the game. I think they see every game as an opportunity. They’re just hungry for their first win,” McKenzie said.
….
Australia can ensure they move away from the bottom of the series standings and even climb to second spot if they put away the Pumas on Saturday.
“We’ve got some really good players to put pressure on [the Pumas], but they’ve defended well in their three games to date,” McKenzie said.
“You’re going to have to be accurate, that’s the one thing we want to improve from last week [against South Africa], it’s being a bit more clinical.
…..
The Wallabies squeaked home 24-23 with a last-gasp converted try over the Springboks in Perth last weekend and will be looking for a more clinical performance against the 12th-ranked Pumas.
“We want to give opportunities and minutes to all in the squad in a process that ends with the World Cup 2015,” coach Daniel Hourcade said.
“We have to keep the good things we have done and then correct the things that we didn’t do well, like the match against New Zealand.”
Argentina were left frustrated by a disallowed try which they believe could have change the course of their Test won by the All Blacks 28-9 last weekend.
Players to watch:
…
For Argentina: Juan Imhoff is back on the right wing and Manuel Montero on the left wing. They are expected to provide some attacking spark, but it is what will happen inside them that is key. Matias Alemanno comes into the second row for the banned Tomas Lavanini and may be in for a baptism of fire.
Head to head: Two of the most entertaining fullbacks in the game – Israel Folau (Australia) against Joaquin Tuculet (Argentina). At flyhalf it is the steady Bernard Foley (Australia) against the more creative Nicolas Sanchez (Argentina). However, the big battle will be in the scrums – the front rows of Sekope Kepu, Tatafu Polota-Nau and James Slipper (Australia) against Ramiro Herrera, Agustín Creevy and Marcos Ayerza (Argentina).
…
Prediction: Israel Folau has scored four tries in two appearances against the Pumas, including his only hat-trick of his Test career in their most recent meeting. He has scored more against the Pumas than any other international side. The Wallabies host a Test match on the Gold Coast for the second time. They defeated Argentina at the same venue almost two years ago 23-19. The Wallabies are undefeated in their last six home Tests (won five and drawn one), their best run since winning 11 home Tests on the trot between 2006 and 2008. Australia beat more than twice as many defenders (25) as South Africa (10) in Perth last week. Despite losing comfortably to the All Blacks, Argentina missed just 15 tackles in the whole 80 minutes and forced the hosts into missing 12 themselves. Argentina have scored at least one try in each of their last five Tests against Australia and at least one in each of their last four away internationals against the Aussies. However, the Pumas have not scored more than one try, and just four in total, in their last eight Tests away from home against Rugby Championship or Six Nations teams. Argentina will give Australia a good run for their money and have a real chance of a win, but we feel their heartache will continue and the Wallabies will sneak it by less than five points.

It is the ambush they are aiming at the Wallabies tonight that would also boldly thrust skipper Agustin Creevy and his teammates into the sights of Australia’s Super Rugby clubs.
Hooker Creevy, 29, yesterday warned that the Pumas were ready to spring an upset on the Gold Coast when also lobbying that his players were all-ears on the contract front.
Livewire half Martin Landajo, who revealed the NSW Waratahs had once made enquiries of his services, and imposing 105kg winger Manuel Montero, a Western Force target, are among the free agents for next season.
…
If demonstrated tonight, his wish to pursue Super Rugby in Australia after his stint with English club Worcester may also stir interest.
….
Creevy’s lust to play in Australia has been fanned by Worcester teammate and neighbour Paul Warwick, the former Nudgee College flyhalf who played for GPS in Brisbane and Manly in Sydney before a varied career in Europe
“I’d love to play in Australia and we have other players who would to. Paul has taught me, how you say, Aussie slang,” Creevy said.
With an Argentinian side to be included in the expanded Super 18 format from 2016, the prospect of transitioning a tough Pumas forward or two into the ranks next season as imports for Australian sides has appeal in the broader vision of the competition.
…
Argentina have a track record of selecting players from outside the country, so picking an Australian-based Pumas player is no great hurdle.

JB, me gusto mucho tu vision global y los ejemplos Barcelona, Alemania, All Blacks.

Hace unos anios hicieron un torneo similar, y descubrieron a Quade cooper, will Genia y Kurtley beale……
Perdon quise decir 2 puntos no 22
